Today in our McCoy Moment we reflect on the “I” in R.I.C.E. which stands for Human Interdependence. Interdependence is different than dependence. Dependence is relying solely on someone or something else. Interdependence is different than independence. Independence means you are free from others and rely only on yourself. Interdependence means 2 people or groups rely on each other equally and work together to accomplish a goal. When you are interdependent, you work together “united like the fingers of a hand”. This is exactly how St. Raphaela Mary, the foundress of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, described the way she hoped the sisters would follow the mission to bring together the children of God so that all might be one.
Sister Elizabeth understood the importance of this and promoted the interconnectedness of all life. Realizing we are all connected as valuable members of this planet, we endeavor to work with one another sharing all that we are and have and to feel gratitude for the contributions of others. For students, practicing interdependence means being a team player - putting ourselves forth to develop relationships using strong communication skills and collaborating with others. Working as a true team, we can better ourselves, our community, and our world.
