Diversity

As a school of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Ancillae-Assumpta Academy is dedicated in mission and vision to celebrating diversity and acting as leaven for community building.  We strive to create an environment that welcomes and values all people and differences.

Student Education

Students at Ancillae-Assumpta Academy learn about our diverse world and its people through a variety of age-appropriate activities, lessons, and presentations beginning in pre-school and deepening in complexity as they move into our upper grades.  Diversity topics are addressed in the curriculum, natural connections are made with the calendar, and our own students' diversity is highlighted through special presentations.

Faculty Training

The faculty at Ancillae-Assumpta Academy play an active role in creating and sustaining a learning environment of inclusion, equity, and respect.  On-going professional development and a commitment to practicing daily what we believe leads teachers and staff in their efforts to teach students the skill of embracing diversity.  Steps include: appreciating ourselves, recognizing others' diversities, appreciating others, planning, and implementing.

Community Support

The community of Ancillae-Assumpta is encouraged to participate in our Diversity and Inclusion group.  The purpose of this group is:

  • to bring families together and support the school's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • to bring broader awareness and education to our school and to our children about family types, cultures, races, national origins, religions, and abilities.
  • to partner with the school to build and sustain a community at AAA that is supportive and encouraging of diversity and inclusion.
  • to provide support, resources, and advice for diversity and inclusion efforts across the school with curricula and co-curricula that appropriately reflects diversity and inclusion.

We are grateful for the diversity of our families and work to cultivate an appreciation for how they enrich our school community.  With the R.I.C.E values as a guide, Ancillae-Assumpta Academy commits to: share responsibility for educating and supporting our community, work interdependently with families to share resources and promote networking, creatively promote the celebration of our diverse community in our classrooms, and empower all to share their unique gifts and varied experiences.
