Grades 1 through 8 have weekly scheduled library classes. Depending on the grade level, the lessons consist of mastering the electronic card catalog, understanding the Dewey Decimal System, exploring genres, participating in a Caldecott Award project and author studies, the use of reference materials, as well as read aloud story lessons or literature exploration. The semi-flexible schedule of the library allows additional time to be scheduled for research projects.
In addition to their scheduled classes, students also visit the library on a flexible schedule that meets the research and/or literary needs of each individual subject area. Research papers are based on the BIG SIX research model as students use a variety of print and online resources to gather information and cite sources. Students become proficient in using online subscription databases, and they begin to experience the nuances of research.
