1.25.16 The Key to Music
Kerry
In General Music classoom students recently completed a unit on comparing Major and Minor tonalities.  In groups, students performed and sung famous folk tunes typically sung in a major key, such as Yankee Doodle, and changed the music to fit a minor key.  They then dove deeper by applying composition skills and altered the lyrics of each folk tune to make the song sad or scary, to help better fit the new minor tonality.
In the MIDI lab, students have been learning the letter names of the piano keys, working on rhythms in the 4/4 time signature and applying all of their new knowledge to playing the piano.  Students recently began playing major chords on the piano in Garageband, working on using the correct fingerings as well as learning how to follow the music on the Grand Staff.
