Academics

Ancillae-Assumpta Academy offers a strong and rigorous academic curriculum for its students. In grades one through eight, the core subject areas of English, math, science, social studies, language arts, music, art, religion, physical education and health are complemented by courses in Spanish, library science and computer education. The pre-school and kindergarten Montessori Unit offers children the opportunity to learn through a self-paced method of education.

The Stepping Stones pre-school offering gives children two and one half to four years of age an opportunity for socialization and learning experiences in a cooperative and friendly environment. To enhance the learning experience of all students, the Curriculum Council and faculty develop comprehensive themes across the curriculum. Skilled instruction, the integration of technology and a cooperative setting promote interdependence and a dynamic style of learning.

Ancillae-Assumpta Academy is proud of the academic achievements of its students. Their success in local, regional and national levels of competition is exceptional, and includes the areas of art, history, language arts, mathematics, music, public speaking, science, and writing.

The confidence, competence and compassion they acquire at Ancillae-Assumpta serve them well in their future endeavors. The Academy's alumni continue earning respect and recognition as competent professionals and committed individuals of the highest moral and ethical standards.

Educating the Uniqueness of Each Child

A Gospel perspective, based on the unique value of the child as created by God, underlies an Ancillae-Assumpta Academy education.  From this view flows the belief that a school should foster the total growth of its students by providing opportunities for spiritual, social, cultural and physical development.  Recognizing the gifts of each child, Ancillae-Assumpta dedicates itself to molding those gifts through a loving, respectful, educational process.

At Ancillae-Assumpta, student experiences and accomplishments go well beyond academic achievements. During their years at the Academy, students become part of a community which lives out the Handmaid motto of serving our brothers and sisters in need while building unity and promoting justice and peace for all. The school provides an environment where students cultivate their unique gifts and pursue them beyond the classroom.

Throughout each year, all students are involved in a number of service projects which benefit children and adults in local orphanages, shelters, hospices, and nursing homes. Globally, our school community supports the Handmaid ministries through the Heart To Heart program.

Students at Ancillae-Assumpta also participate in a range of activities designed to intensify their classroom studies and enhance their learning experiences. These include day trips exploring the Amish country, Harrisburg, Baltimore Harbor, Gettysburg, Washington D.C., and an extended trip to Colonial Williamsburg.

A very active and well-developed Student Council offers students the opportunity to be leaders and to sponsor academic, service, and social activities, including those that actualize the R.I.C.E. values. Three elected officers, along with representatives of various components including community service, safety and ecology, school spirit, publicity, fine arts, and athletics, comprise the council's executive body. Six students from each of grades five through eight are elected to serve as council representatives, and assist in focusing the activities of the student body, interfacing with the faculty and staff, and being the student visionaries for the school.

In addition to physical education and health classes, the Academy boasts a strong athletic program in which students participate in teams for varsity and junior varsity interscholastic league competition and intramural programs. As a member of the Catholic Academy League, the Academy fields teams for boys, girls, and co-educational teams. Nearly half of the students in grades five through eight participate in one or more athletic teams. Intramural teams also comprise an extensive number of students in grades three through eight.

Each of these educational opportunities contribute to educating the total child, and offer students opportunities that extend beyond the classroom walls into the global community.
